Hamilton: being in the room where it happens
Published on June 30, 2020
Thanks to Disney and US Embassy in Nepal for virtually bringing us together through the screening of the inspiring play Hamilton, a story about leadership, tenacity and hope that is more relevant today than ever! Several of our members watched the play in sneak preview thanks to the specific outreach to theatres and artists by the embassy. On behalf of One World Theatre, Rose Schwietz, thoughtful theatre artist and also an American citizen, a pending Fulbright scholar, and a talented OWT director, actor, and singer with an interest in musicals, attended the virtual discussion among artists. The discussion was a relatively free talk about everyone's responses to watching Hamilton. It addressed aesthetic/artistic points, the race bending casting, the portrayal and representation of women, and the show's relevance to our current world and to Nepal. The presence in the same meeting of two other OWT Senior Staff members Alize Biannic, representing Solis, and Kavita Srinivasan as an Independent, speaks volumes to the presence of women and the increasing ownership of OWT members within our social justice theatre company. Glad to be in the room where it happens! #FilmDiplomacy
